Gov. Rick Perry spoke of nostalgia and little politics Thursday at familiar places known to him from his Paint Creek days.
Perry visited Hendrick Medical Center and Camp Tonkawa to award a grant and a deed respectively.
Hendrick Health Systems President and CEO Tim Lancaster plugged Perry’s upcoming cover on Newsweek magazine, but about as political as Perry got Thursday was mentioning job growth in Texas during the last year.
Otherwise, the governor spoke of a short-term job at Hendrick, his son’s birth there and his days spent at Camp Tonkawa.
Perry presented a $175,000 grant to Hendrick Medical Center to create an accelerated program that will allow students with Licensed Vocational Nursing degrees become Registered Nurses in about six months.
“We’re going to get 20 new nurses in this area because of this program,” Perry said.
The Wagner-Peyser grant is administered by the Texas Workforce Commission for projects leading to job placement, increased wages and job retention. With the grant, Hendrick Medical Center will partner with the Angelo State University School of Nursing. The program will begin this fall.
